There are many human figures.A good number of the men have raised hair, of these the most elegant is the figure of a man whose left hand is unnaturally long and reaching his feet.

Another man has a square shaped and spiral belly. Some of the figures are wearing masks and heavy garments.

The figure of a women have head is simplified into a cross, and another cross is marked on her hips. Another figure of a women shown standing on a platform.
In rock carvings we can identify crosses, triangles & tridents , squares, some with inner crosses & a rectangle divided into 9 square shaped chambers, stars, wheels, quatrefoils, spirals, whorls & volutes, plant motifs, pot shaped items , various animals, including ones resembling foxes, dogs& deer and the unmistakable outline of an elephant.
He identified the caves as a habitant of neolithic people on the basis of the scripts and pictures of the cave walls.

Mr. Fawcett writes that the carvings might have been the handiwork of Kurumbers[ a wayanad tribal community].
In 1890, Mr.Fred fawcett, the then supreintendent of police of the malabar district happened to see some stone axe or chisel recovered from the Colin mackenzie's coffee estate. Later he explored the edakkal rock shelter and ambukuthimala.
The upper chamber is about 96 feet long, 20 feet wide & 18 feet high.Light enters the cave through a big hole of the roof where the boulder does not touch the facing wall.
Inside the cave have two parts, the lower chamber measures about 18 feet long, 12 feet wide & 10 feet high. The cave entrance have 5 * 8 feet width.
The name Edakkal literally means '' a stone between '' in malayalam language.
The rock carvings are date back over 5000 years, it is assumed that the edakkal caves had been inhabitated at various periods in history.
